Jean Varon was a label that was designed by John Bates. Supposedly, he chose the name because he thought a french name would be more successful in the fashion industry than his own, which was British. His mod, op art dresses, including early plastic outfits, were ground breaking at the time. There is always a debate as to who invented the mini skirt - some say Mary Quant, some say Andre Courreges, but some say John Bates! He is perhaps most well known for his designs worn by Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in the 1960's television show, The Avengers.
