This is an absolutely incredible vintage outfit from Athens, Greece designer George Stavropoulos. I have had the privilege of selling several Stavropoulos evening gowns and it is always an honor to see one in person because of the exceptional craftsmanship and the luxurious fabric.
This stunning silk two-piece outfit from the late 1970's includes a pair of pants with an elastic waist band and a gorgeous draped top with dolman style sleeves that are set in. The color is a rich, deep burgundy and this there are weights in the sleeves so that they hang just perfectly.
I encourage you to used the measurements for the best fit, but I would estimate this to be a size medium. The top is one size and the pants fit approximately a size 8 through 12.
HEM CIRCUMFERENCE: 19"
LENGTH from nape of neck: 34"
George Stavropoulos was born in Tripolis, Greece and his clothes often even resembled those once worn by the people portrayed by ancient Greek statues. Stavropoulos was a very unique, original fashion designer for the time, because he refused to copy French designs. He was also known to be particular about who he would work with and often said that if he did not like a customer, he would not sell to her.
He was known for his fluid, floating evening gowns, sometimes created with layers of different-colored chiffon. He made dresses for many famous women including Lady Bird Johnson, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand and Maria Callas, and also sold ready-to-wear through such stores as Martha and Bonwit Teller.
